Diabetes is a long lasting or chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Diabetes occurs when your blood glucose or blood sugar is too high. Our main source of energy comes from the food and drinks we consume. Our pancreas produces a hormone called insulin and this hormone helps glucose from food and drinks consumed get into our cells to be used for energy. Type 1 Diabetes, where the pancreas is unable to create insulin, can develop at any age, although it often happens during childhood or adolescence.
