Health Benefits of Probiotics
What are Probiotics and why do we need it? Read further to learn more.
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that are beneficial for our gut health. Having the right gut bacteria has been proven to improve digestion, enhance immune function, provide healthier skin and reduce risk to some illnesses. As it is difficult to get adequate and right probiotics solely from food, we recommend taking a good quality supplement to help colonize our gut with good microorganisms. For example, whilst yoghurt may be a popular source of probiotics, many commercial yoghurts are not as healthy as they seem due to added sugars, colourings, flavourings and preservatives. Some people are also allergic to dairy.
Other sources of Probiotic foods include kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and tempeh. Probiotics should not be confused with prebiotics, which are fibres that help feed the friendly bacteria already in your gut. The most common Probiotic bacteria are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. With regards to supplements, you need to ensure that these are able to survive the harsh environment of the stomach. Many supplements are promoted as having several billion bacteria at the time of manufacture. Be careful with such marketing as what is vital is, how much of these probiotic bacteria are still available at the time of packaging and more importantly, how much will survive the harsh environment of the stomach.
Not all Probiotic supplements are made equal. Choosing the wrong one can be ineffective, costly (although it initially appears much cheaper) and in some cases, may cause further damage.
The Probiotic Supplement we personally use and recommend is Usana’s Probiotic. These have been tested and proven to survive the harsh environment of the stomach acids.
We have also used these to help cure antibiotic associated diarrhea and food poisoning. Probiotics also help combat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which is a common digestive disorder. It can also help reduce gas, bloating, constipation and other symptoms.
It can also be useful for various skin concerns such as Acne, Rosacea, Eczema and Psoriasis. Probiotics have potential to extend lifespan by increasing the ability of cells to replicate themselves.
Other benefits of probiotics include reducing systematic inflammation which causes many other diseases such as Psoriasis and Arthritis. Having a healthy gut will also reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Probiotics may also help reduce blood pressure. It also helps strengthen our immune system, leading to reduced risk of infections such as the common cold, flu and other viruses.

Imbalances of intestinal flora are related to lung diseases and respiratory tract infections. This is useful to know especially during colder months where illnesses such as colds, flu and other related illnesses are more common. Diseases like Psoriasis is one of the most degrading, humiliating and energy sapping diseases one can have. We have proven that with the right foods, drinks and supplements, you can prevent illnesses such as those mentioned here.
One of the most important organs in the body is the small intestine, leading to the large intestine. That is where your digestion takes place mostly. Our gut carries up to 500 million types of bacteria and can be as high as several trillion. The probiotics we recommended above contains a special buffer that bypasses the stomach acid and goes straight to the digestive system. It populates the gut, multiplies and colonises the gut.
Probiotics will help if you suffer from any indigestion, heartburn or sleeplessness caused by indigestion. It will resolve any uneasiness within half an hour. When you take probiotics regularly for the rest of your life, you will always be in great shape from a digestive point of view.
There are a number of signs that you need probiotics. These include allergies and asthma, mood swings and disorders, if you have had food poisoning, you always get sick and have poor skin health such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. We also recommend taking probiotics if you are or have taken antibiotics. What the prescribers of antibiotics often fail to inform you is that Bio means life, so antibio means anti life. Antibiotics therefore destroy the good gut bacteria in your body and it is therefore important that you replace these by taking a good source of probiotic supplements like the one recommended above.
