Psoriasis and Your Immune System

Our immune system is our body’s line of defence from outside invaders such as germs, viruses, toxins and bacteria. It is made up of different organs, cells and proteins that work together. There are various contributors that can weaken our immune system such as stress and infections from viruses. It is therefore important to maintain a healthy immune system which will indirectly enable us to maintain great health all year round.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes overproduction of skin cells. This leads to red, scaly patches on the skin which is very unsightly. Whilst Psoriasis is not contagious, the unsightly skin can cause Psoriasis sufferers to become unsociable or even frowned upon by family, friends, colleagues and society. It can also lead to anxiety, bullying and depression. Psoriasis affects over 2% of the worldwide population and can significantly affect the sufferer’s quality of life.

Maintaining a healthy immune system is very crucial for overall health and well-being.  A strong and healthy immune system protects the body against harmful viruses, bacteria and pathogens. It can also help prevent the development of chronic diseases such as autoimmune disorders, heart disease and cancer. When our immune system is weakened, it can lead to numerous health problems such as Psoriasis.

There are many quick fix medication solutions for treating Psoriasis. These include topical creams, chemical medication and light therapy. However, these are never the recommended long term solutions as there are many negative side effects and do not address the root causes of the condition. By maintaining a healthy immune system, the development of Psoriasis can be prevented and the severity of symptoms reduced and any potential relapses prevented.

A healthy immune system can be maintained by eating balanced meals consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, seeds and healthy fats. Inflammation is a key factor in the development of Psoriasis.  Managing symptoms via eating anti-inflammatory foods such as fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel), nuts and seeds, whole grains and colourful vegetables and fruits are key. Likewise, you must avoid foods that trigger or worsen Psoriasis symptoms. These include red meat, alcohol and processed foods.

Regular exercise such as brisk walks can improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress and strengthen our immune system. In addition, getting sufficient good quality sleep is essential for the body to repair and regenerate. This will strenghten our immune system.

It is also important that we learn to manage our daily stress, which is part of life. We need to make time to have quality quiet time with ourselves and also breathe deeper. Stress from smoking and consuming excessive alcohol can weaken our immune system and increase the risk of developing Psoriasis.

Supplements are important in managing Psoriasis symptoms. This is because we are unlikely to obtain all our daily requirements for vitamins and minerals from foods alone, even if it is organic. This is due to soil quality depletion, oxidation by the time the food is sourced and used for our consumption and also how the meals are prepared. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements such as Usana’s Biomega and Biomega Junior have anti-inflammatory properties.

It is important to consult with a healthcare professional such as our clinic before starting any new treatment to ensure these remedies are safe and effective for you. We look forward to hearing from you so that we can guide you further.
