3 Most Common Symptoms of Undiagnosed Diabetes

They include excessive thirst (polydipsia), frequent urination (polyuria) and unexplained weight loss. Such indications can be rather conspicuous, so it is possible to notice them when it is too late, particularly when you are unaware of the fact that they are connected with the poor regulation of the blood sugar levels. Untreated diabetes (as a silent killer) may destroy the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves without any warning.

Not feeling well? Have you been feeling these symptoms? You or the person you want to help needs to read and follow this blog carefully. Now, let’s look at each of these symptoms in closer detail, and why they are important.

Excessive Thirst (Polydipsia)

What it feels like:

You are always thirsty even after drinking water. It is not merely a dry mouth following a salty meal or a hot day but also a constant desire to drink and drink more water.

Why it happens:

When the amount of sugar in your blood is above normal (a condition referred to as hyperglycemia), your kidneys work overtime in filtering and removing the extra amount of sugar by way of urine. This causes water loss and dehydration that causes the brain to stimulate you to drink more water. It is your body that is trying to eliminate the sugar through excessive urination and is trying to correct the fluid imbalance.

Red flags to watch for:

  • There are times you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night feeling thirsty
  • Water does not appear to satisfy your thirst
  • You begin wishing you could drink cold drinks all the time

Why it’s dangerous to ignore:

Chronic dehydration may result in fatigue, electrolyte disorder, and in worst conditions, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), an acute condition that poses a risk to human life, especially individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Frequent Urination (Polyuria)

What it feels like:

You are urinating much more than usual, particularly at night. Not only due to an increased intake of fluids, but also as soon as you drink anything, your bladder feels full and the need to urinate is urgent.

Why it happens:

When your body attempts to eliminate the excessive levels of blood sugar, it draws water out of your tissues to dilute the sugar in the blood. This causes excessive urine production. Kidneys are only able to reabsorb a certain amount of glucose, and when they cannot keep up with it, the remaining glucose is passed to your urine, with lots of water.

Red flags to watch for:

  • You are passing urine more than 7-8 times a day
  • You get up to urinate at night several times (nocturia)
  • You begin planning activities based on the availability of bathrooms

Why it’s dangerous to ignore:

The need to urinate constantly is not only interfering in the normal life of a person, but it is also taking away the vital nutrients and body fluids that are much needed to maintain the water balance in your body and dehydration, fatigue and poor control of blood sugar levels can be a result.

Unexplained Weight Loss

What it feels like:

You are losing weight and you are not doing anything different with your diet or exercise schedule. You might even be consuming more food than usual and yet you lose weight.

Why it happens:

Glucose cannot get into your cells when you lack sufficient insulin (or do not respond to insulin normally), so that the glucose can be used to make energy. That is why your body begins burning fat and muscle as fuel instead. This results in rapid, unhealthy weight loss especially among individuals having type 1 diabetes though it is also possible among individuals with type 2.

Red flags to watch for:

  • You have dropped at least 10 pounds within a short time frame
  • Your clothes have suddenly become looser and you cannot understand why.
  • You are too weak or you feel tired even after eating

Why it’s dangerous to ignore:

Unexpected weight loss is usually an indication of extreme metabolic stress experienced by the body. It may be an indicator of a diabetes emergency (such as DKA) or can cause muscle wasting, nutrient deficiency and weakened immune system.

Other Warning Signs to Look Out For

Even though the above three symptoms are common, undiagnosed diabetes may also lead to:

  • Blurred vision – Fluid changes in the eyes caused by fluctuating blood sugar levels
  • Fatigue – It is as a result of dehydration and a lack of usable glucose in cells
  • Slow healing wounds or frequent infections – Due to high blood sugar which compromises the circulation and immune response
  • Prickling or numbness on the hands and feet – This is one of the signs of diabetic neuropathy beginning to appear
  • Increased hunger (polyphagia) – Particularly after meals, as the cells are in need of glucose as a food source

They do not occur immediately in conjunction with the three main symptoms, but they tend to be combined or follow these symptoms in the long run.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Diabetes, particularly type 2, can easily ruin your body without showing clear signs of the condition or making any symptoms apparent until several years later. By the time the signs appear, the complications such as nerve damage, vision loss or kidney issues might already be in progress.

Early detection = Prevention.

A simple blood test (such as fasting glucose, HbA1c, or an oral glucose tolerance test) can detect diabetes before it causes any significant damage. And in a lot of instances of prediabetes, lifestyle adjustments are sufficient to turn around or slow the progression.

Who’s Most at Risk?

The likelihood of developing undiagnosed diabetes is higher in case you:

  • Are more than 45 years of age
  • Have a family history of diabetes
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Lead a sedentary life
  • Have high blood pressure or cholesterol
  • Experienced gestational diabetes in pregnancy
  • Belong to some ethnic groups (e.g. South Asian, African, Hispanic or Native American)

And if all this is familiar to you, and you have any of the three major symptoms, then it might be worth getting checked.

When to See a Doctor

Do not wait till it becomes worse. Contact your healthcare provider if:

  • You observe constant thirst and urination
  • You are dropping weight involuntarily
  • You are feeling fatigued, cranky, or have blurred vision all the time

A simple blood test by your physician will enable you to begin treatment or prevention at once.

Conclusion

Diabetes may be sneaky in its onset, but its preliminary symptoms, such as an increased water intake, urinary frequency, and unexplained weight loss, are the alarm call of the body.
